I came up with this idea a couple of nights back while trying to get to sleep. I was trying to think of how I'd get a dragon that was shaped like a Asian dragon but with European animal characteristics. I mean I already had the shape and form I wanted the dragon to be but the how was not coming together as easy and as well as I was hoping. I mean how do you shift a 'Asian' dragon to a European setting? My idea really excites me. The idea that form was that this breed of dragon takes on the form of the words spoken over it while it is in the egg.
To expand on this idea let me break down some of the loose ideas for the story that I have been playing with to better explain it.
The story opens with a lil boy that loves to fight imaginary monsters to protect his village/town etc. While he is off 'Banishing the North Hill Beast' (a fox that has been sneaking into the local neighbor's farms and killing chickens) he helps run off the 'Beast' but is to late to save the hen and most her eggs. So the Farmer's wife gives him the last egg to hatch and raise as a thanks to his help. Like most kids he brings it home and tells his mum of his brave deed and how he now must raise the chick since he could not save its mum. He keeps it close, safe and warm. Wrapping it up in blankets and keeping it near the hearth at night. So it is not a surprise that it is there when the father returns from being abroad with the local branch of the army and spins tales of his journeys and all the wonderful stories he heard while away from home. Thus from the tales of far away lands and creatures both real and imaginary as well as the lil boys vivid imagination spoken 'over' and around the egg the dragon takes a more foreign form.
The dragon is a Dream dragon. It soaks up all the ideas and words and stories spoke around it as it grows in its shell and takes the form of many of those ideas. Then as I was trying to come up with why the bad guys might be coming after it when the news of it got out I came up with some more back story with the lore of the Dream dragons. Back in the day when the Dream dragons where more numerous people known as Black Scribes scourer the know lands for the clutches and horrible tales to put down in their books to later chant over the clutches. Most of the times the Scribes used the horrible tales from the soldiers in their army, all the horrible deeds that they inflicted on the people they crushed. Other times when those where not horrendous enough they would grab people off the streets and throw them into dungeons until they wailed and screamed from fear, crying and yelling to the guards that they did not want all the horrible things they had heard rumored to happen to them and all the horrible things that their own mind ran away with. Thus giving ample venom to chant over the clutches hatching armies of monsters. This is the reason they came to be known as Night Terrors. Many times what lurks in the imagination is much worse then anything that comes from life. This way anything that is scratched down on the vellum is much worse then any blade.
I really like this idea. It has so many fun ideas to twist and play with.
(by the way "Baarup" comes from the the way the lil Dream dragon tries to imitate the sound of the families dog's barks and growls)
